Central Health Region, Ministry of Health, joins the global community to recognize its nurses as part of Nurses Week, May 12-17 2013. Mrs. Melinda Guerra, Regional Manager, expresses her appreciation to active and retired nurses who have contributed their invaluable work at Central Health Region.

This year, Nurses Week is being celebrated under the theme: “Closing the Gap: The Millennium Development Goals: 87654321…” which highlights Reduce Child Mortality, Improve Maternal Health, and Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases.

A series of events occurring during the week will showcase Church Services, Trainings and Workshops, Social Events, Health Awareness/Education, and a National Nurses Conference scheduled for Friday, May 17, 2013.

International Nurses Day (IND) is celebrated around the world every 12 of May. This day iscelebrated to remember all of the valuable contributions nurses make to society.

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has celebrated this day since 1965. In January 1974,the decision was made to celebrate the day on 12 of May as it is the anniversary of the birth ofFlorence Nightingale, who is widely considered the founder of modern nursing.

The Ministry of Health wishes to thank all nurses who have contributed to improving the health care of Belizeans.
